Planting Grasstrees
Grasstrees and zamias make excellent native plants in commercial and domestic environments. Once re-established, they make outstanding features. A little care and planning in the beginning will result in plants that require minimal maintenance or water. Below are a few tips to make the job easier.
Choose a sunny area.- Select well drained soil. If the ground is clay, plant above ground level in a raised mound or raised bed to prevent root rot due to excess moisture. If the soil is sandy, add a garden or landscapers mix of soil at a rate of 1 part sand to 1 part mix. The garden mix will add nutrients and help with water retention.
- Plant to a depth so that the top of the rootball is slightly below ground level to create a natural well.
- Water in and compact the soil around the root ball making sure there are no air pockets and that the plant is firmly seated.
- Water once to twice weekly during the dry season of October - May, making sure that the rootball and developing roots get thoroughly wet. Grasstrees Australia will advise on the correct amount upon purchase.
- Grasstrees will require a water during the winter months depending on the environment to which it is planted & the current rainfall.
- Each spring for the first two years, cut off any flower stalks, as they can stress the plant. Monitor flowering development, as malformed stalks will need to be removed.

Caring for Grasstrees & Zamias
Grasstrees Australia has developed specialised processes that result in grasstrees becoming more hardy and resilient to transplanting. Once re-established, grasstrees will require very little maintenance. Below are a few tips to help you grow a more healthier and attractive plant.
- Plants of approximately 1-2 metres require about 30-50 litres of water per week, depending on your plant size and conditions.
- Reduce this amount by 50% if the plant is in clay soil, and monitor the soil moisture closely.
- Add a slow release fertiliser every 3-4 months to stimulate foliage and root growth.
- Fallen debris from surrounding trees should be removed from the plant foliage, as this could lead to a fungal infestation.
- Apply a low toxicity systemic fungicide to the foliage for fungal infestations.
- For scale insects, spray the foliage with white/pest oil. Refer to the product label for correct application.
- Grasstrees commonly form a skirt around the change of season. This can be removed, however it does not affect the plants health.
